Little prince and the fox

it was then that the fox appeared.

那時，狐狸出現了。

"good morning" said the fox.

"早安。"

"good morning" the little prince responded politely

"早安，"小王子溫和地說，

altho when he turned around he saw nothing.

但是他轉頭回答時沒看到任何人。

"I am right here" the voice said, "under the apple tree."

"我在這裡，"那個聲音說"在蘋果樹下。"

"who are you?" asked the little prince, and added,

"你是誰?"小王子問，

"You are very pretty to look at."

"而且你看起來真漂亮。"

"I am a fox", the fox said.

"我是狐狸，"狐狸說。

"Come and play with me," proposed the little prince, "I am so unhappy."

"和我一起玩吧，"小王子提議 ，"我很不快樂。"

"I cannot play with you," the fox said, "I am not tamed."

"我不能和你一起玩，"狐狸說，

"我還沒有被馴服。"

"AH please excuse me," said the little prince.

"啊，抱歉！" 小王子說。

But after some thought, he added: "what does that mean---'tame'?"

但他想過之後，他問 " '馴服'是什麼意思?"

"you do not live here," said the fox, "what is it you are looking for?"

"你不是住這的人，" 狐狸說，"你在找什麼?"

"I am looking for men," said the little prince. "What does that mean---tame?"

"我在找一個人，" 小王子說。" '馴服'是什麼意思?'

"Men,"said the fox,

"人類，"

"they have guns, and they hunt.

It is very disturbing.

They also raise chickens.

These are their only interests.

Are you looking for chickens?"

"他們有槍，而且她們打獵。

她們也獵野雞。這是他們唯一在意的事。你也在找野雞嗎?"

"No," said the little prince.

"不"小王子說。

"I am looking for friends.

What does that mean---tame?"

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox.

"It means to establish ties."

"To establish ties?"

"Just that," said the fox.

"to me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys.

And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me.

To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

But if you tame me, then we shall need each other.

To me, you will be unique in all the world.

To you, I shall be unique in all the world. . ."

"好比我和你，對我來說，你和其他小男孩沒什麼不同，

我不需要你。而對你來說，你也不需要我。

對你來說，我和其他狐狸沒什麼不同。

但若你馴服了我，我們便會需要彼此。

對我來說，你會是世界上獨一無二的。

對你來說，我應該會是世界上獨一無二的..."

"I am beginning to understand," said the little prince.

"There is a flower. . . I think she has tamed me. . ."

"It is possible," said the fox.

"On earth one sees all sorts of things."

"Oh but this is not on the earth!" said the little prince.

The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

"On another planet?"

"Yes"

"Are there hunters on that planet?"

"No"

"Ah that's interesting! Are there chickens?"

"No"

"Nothing is perfect," sighed the fox.

"沒有那些真是太好了"，狐狸說。

But he came back to his idea.

"My life is very monotonous," he said.

"我的生活相當單調，"他說。

"I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike.

And in consequence, I am a little bored.

But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life.

I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others.

Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground.

Yours will call me, like music out of my burrow.

And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder ?

I do not eat bread.

Wheat is of no use to me.

The wheat fields have nothing to say to me.

And that is sad.

But you have hair that is the color of gold.

Think how wonderful that will be,

when you have tamed me!

The grain, which is also golden,

will bring me back the thought of you.

And I shall love to listen

to the wind in the wheat. . ."

"我獵野雞，人類獵我。所有的野雞看起來都差不多，獵我的人看起來也都差不多。我開始覺得很無趣。

但你若馴服了我，就彷彿有陽光照進我的生活，我會開始感覺這些事情的意義與以往不同。

當我為了躲避獵人而回到我的藏身處，

你就好像在叫我，你的聲音像是從洞口傳來的音樂。

看看那遠處的麥田---

我不吃麵包，麥子對我來說毫無用處。

麥田對我來說也毫無意義。也就是說，

因為你的頭髮是好看的金黃色，

一旦你馴服了我，

而麥田，也是金黃色的，

那會使我想到你。

那麼，我想我將會愛上傾聽，微風吹拂麥田的聲音..。"

The fox gazed at the little prince,

for a long time.

"Please---tame me!" he said.

"I want to, very much," the little prince replied.

"But I have not much time.

I have friends to discover,

and a great many things to understand."

"One only understands the things that one tames,"

said the fox.

" Men have no more time to understand anything.

They buy things all ready made at the shops.

But there is no shop anywhere

where one can buy friendship,

and so men have no friends any more.

If you want a friend, tame me. . ."

"人類總是沒有多餘的時間，因為要學習所有的事。

他們獲取所有商店的東西。

但是商店的東西是無所不在的，沒有一處買得到友情，

因此人們無法獲得友情。

假如你希望得到朋友，馴服我吧...。"

"What must I do, to tame you? asked the little prince.

"You must be very patient," replied the fox.

First you will sit down at a little distance from me-like that-in the grass.

I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye,

and you will say nothing.

Words are the source of misunderstandings.

But you will sit a little closer to me,

every day..."

"首先，你必須坐得來我遠一點，就像現在這樣，在草地上。

我會在我眼裡看到一點點的你，

而你什麼也不必說。

話語總是誤解的來源。

但你應該坐得靠近我一點，

每天，一點一點地靠近我...。"

The next day the little prince came back.

"It would have been better to come back

at the same hour," said the fox.

"If for example, you came at four o'clock

in the afternoon,

then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy.

I shall feel happier and happier

as the hour advances.

At four o'clock,

I shall be worrying and jumping about.

I shall show you how happy I am!

But if you come at just any time,

I shall never know at what hour

my heart is ready to greet you. . .

One must observe the proper rites. . ."

"What is a rite?" asked the little prince.

" '儀式' 是什麼意思?" 小王子問。

"Those also are actions too often neglected,"

"這是幾乎被忽略的事情，"

said the fox.

狐狸說。

"they are what make one day

different from other days,

one hour different from other hours.

There is a rite, for example, among my hunters.

Every Thursday they danse with the village girls.

So Thursday is a wonderful day for me!

I can take a walk as far as the vineyards.

But if the hunters danced at just any time,

every day would be like

every other day, and I should never have any vacation at all."

"在那麼多天之中，有一天會和其他日子是很不同的，有些時刻和其他時刻是很不同的。

那時會有一場儀式，好比那些獵人，

每個星期四，他們會和村莊裡的女孩去跳舞，

那麼星期四對我來說就是特別的日子！

我可以像在葡萄園裡，想去哪裡就去哪裡，

但如果獵人每一天都去跳舞，

對我來說，每天就會是一樣的，

每天都和其他的日子一樣，那我就不會有任何假期了。"

So the little prince tamed the fox.

And when the hour of his departure drew near---

"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry."

"It is your own fault," said the little prince.

"I never wished you any sort of harm;

but you wanted me to tame you. . ."

"Yes that is so", said the fox.

"But now you are going to cry!"

said the little prince.

"Yes that is so" said the fox.

"Then it has done you no good at all!"

"It has done me good," said the fox,

"because of the color of the wheat fields."

And then he added:

"go and look again at the roses.

You will understand now

that yours is unique in all the world.

Then come back to say goodbye to me,

and I will make you a present of a secret."

"回頭看看那玫瑰花。

你現在可以了解，你是這世界獨一無二的。

而你即將向我說再見，

我將會把你當作一個祕密而已。"

The little prince went away,

to look again at the roses.

"You are not at all like my rose," he said.

"As yet you are nothing.

No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one.

You are like my fox when I first knew him.

He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes.

But I have made a friend, and now he is unique in all the world."

"彷彿你什麼也不是。

沒有人馴服你，你也沒有馴服任何人。

你就像我第一次認識狐狸的時候。

他就像是其他狐狸。

但我現在有一個朋友，而他對我來說是這世界上獨一無二的。"

And the roses were very much embarrassed.

"You are beautiful, but you are empty," he went on.

"One could not die for you.

To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you--the rose that belongs to me.

But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses:

because it is she that I have watered;

because it is she that I have put under the glass globe;

because it is for her

that I have killed the caterpillars

(except the two or three we saved to become butterflies);

because it is she that I have listened to,

when she grumbled,

or boasted,

or even sometimes when she said nothing.

Because she is MY rose."

"你真美，但你卻很空虛。

沒有任何人願意為你而死，

當然，你就像我過去的那朵玫瑰，我的玫瑰。

在她心裡，她比其他像你一樣的玫瑰重要，

因為我天天為他澆水，我將她保護在玻璃罩底下，

為了她，我殺了毛毛蟲(除了那兩隻被我放生而成為蝴蝶的毛毛蟲)，

And he went back to meet the fox.

"Goodbye" he said.

"Goodbye," said the fox.

"And now here is my secret, a very simple secret:

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly;

what is essential is invisible to the eye."

"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated,

so that he would be sure to remember.

" '看不見的事物'是什麼意思? " 小王子問，而且他會永遠記得。

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose

that makes your rose so important."

"就是你為了你的玫瑰所付出的時間，那些時間使得你的玫瑰變得如此重要。"

"It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince

so he would be sure to remember.

"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox.

"But you must not forget it.

You become responsible, forever,

for what you have tamed.

You are responsible for your rose. . ."

"人類會忘記這個道理，"狐狸說。

"但你會永遠記得。

你會變得負責，永遠地，為你所馴服的負責。

你將會為你的玫瑰負責..."

"I am responsible for my rose,"

the little prince repeated,

so that he would be sure to remember.

十一年後，我終於這麼做了。 (笑)
